Implementation of the New Way of Working at Microsoft

Download PDF One of the best known implementations of the New Way of Working in several countries has been realised by Microsoft. The Netherlands was the first country where Microsoft introduced the New Way of Working, at its office at Schiphol in 2008. Other countries, such as Finland, the UK, Belgium and Denmark, followed later. What made Microsoft’s implementation of the New Way of Working in several countries so successful?

According to the Vice President of Microsoft Western Europe, organizations are increasingly shifting from the concept of flexible working to a "New World of Work". A world where innovatively organized offices and state-of-the-art technologies enable staff to work increasingly flexible and more efficient. According to Microsoft, the three cornerstones of this "New World of Work" are: people, places and technology. These three elements must be tuned to each other such that staff can perform their work as optimally as possible irrespective of the place where they are working.

Point of departure: productive, happy staff
The basis for doing this well is: trust. In the philosophy of Microsoft, staff must not be judged on their presence in the office, but on their output. Does such an implementation work the same everywhere, in all countries? Not according to Microsoft: they do not profess to have a one-size-fits-all solution. It depends on the (corporate) culture, the office environment, the mentality, and the way organizations and countries shape the "New World of Work". Nonetheless, the point of departure is the same everywhere. Microsoft wants to let staff work in a way that is the most productive for them. After all, this results in happy staff.

Finally, another interesting fact regarding the implementation of the New Way of Working at Microsoft Netherlands: the staff have been equipped with the Ergo-Q 260 mobile laptop stand as one of their work tools.
