Recent studies have linked prolonged and intensive use of a traditional computer mouse to an increased risk of wrist, forearm and shoulder complaints, particularly due to persistent wrist deviations and forearm pronation (Andersen et al., 2019; Oakman & Kinsman, 2021). Vertical mice are designed to place the hand in a more neutral, so-called hand-shaking position, reducing both lateral wrist flexion and internal rotation of the forearm (Lin et al., 2021). This reduces muscle activity in the forearm compared to traditional mice, which can contribute to reducing physical strain during prolonged computer use (Schmid et al., 2015; Lin et al., 2021).
