What is the correct viewing height and distance?
The distance to the screen should be at least 60 cm (one arm's length), but preferably more than 60 cm. The height of the screen should be arranged so that the viewing angle is 10-20° below eye level. The viewing distance is determined by the character height, whereby the viewing distance is at least 200 and preferably 150 times the character height (a character height of 4 mm corresponds to a viewing distance of 60 cm).
A relatively large viewing distance is less stressful for the eyes, because the eyes do not have to accommodate so strongly, provided that the characters on the screen become proportionally larger. The characters on the screen can sometimes be enlarged, Word has a zoom in and out function with which the view of the active document can be enlarged or reduced. Larger characters are read faster than small ones.
The entire display should be in an area 10-20° below eye level. This monitor position allows the eyes to accommodate and converge better, and the overall eye strain is reduced. And not unimportant: productivity is at the same time about 10% higher (Sommerich et al., 1998).
